Migration to German data centers from European rights centers is now possible

free migration from Europe to Germany from October 2020

A move from European data centers (Dublin, Amsterdam) to German data centers (Frankfurt, Berlin) is possible from November 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021. So you can move to Germany (Frankfurt, Berlin) for free, if it is activated in the admincenter.

Application: 1.November 2020 until 30. April 2021 (Not later than 30.April 2021, it´s a hard deadline)
Requirement: Invoice in Germany

Possibel for: Business / Enterprise
not Possible for: EDU, NGO

What you have to do?

You need the Global Administrator Role and have to go to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Here you can start the migration to the German Datacenter in Frankfurt and Dublin. After the confirmation the process starts. You will get information in the notification center.

The move to Germany

The relocation can take different lengths of time depending on the tenant, Microsoft specifies a maximum duration of 24 months. You cannot influence this time yourself, you are only a silent observer. I have already done several moves e.g. from Dublin to Paris or Dublin to Zurich, these took about 2.5 months for 800 and 6 months for 3k.

As Tenant Admin, you will receive corresponding messages via the notification center, which show the status of the migration. However, you cannot influence this. Microsoft moves the entire Tenant in the background with various partners (subs).

The move involves the creation of a new tenant and the Microsoft team gradually moving all the data over and then also moving the domain /custom and Co. We were able to keep the default domain, whether this is also 1 to 1 from EU to DE will be seen.

It is interesting that this is an internal Microsoft migration. The users did not have to change their Outlook, because Microsoft also changes the route internally. Up to now, this also applied to their own domains.
